Although Amtrak is considered a commercial enterprise, it is majority owned by the US federal government. Amtrak's mission is "to provide an efficient and effective intercity rail mobility service, offering superior quality and time-competitiveness with other intercity transportation alternatives". Amtrak provides long-distance passenger service, serving 500 stations in 46 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and three Canadian provinces.
