This poster is also a true work of photographic art featuring a fireworks display seen from the Place de la Concorde. Karl MACHATSCHEK was born on 26 August 1906 in Teschen, then in Austria-Hungary, which became Cieszyn in 1919, in Poland. After finishing secondary school, he learned lithography and the printing trade from his father. He attended the Professional School of Applied Arts in Breslau and Munich (illustration, advertising, photography) during the Bauhaus period, before continuing his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. In 1929, he joined the Académie Libre de Peinture in Montparnasse. In 1947-48, he worked as an advertising illustrator before turning to photography (for Éperon magazine, posters for the Office National du Tourisme, illustrations, the AIR FRANCE calendar, the Touring Club de France, Reader's Digest, and many others).
