Anonymous - Society for the Protection of Martyred Children. 1897. Printed by Goossens, Brussels. 88.5x124cm. Original lithographed poster, canvas-backed. Condition A-, traces of marginal tears. This society was founded in Belgium to help combat child poverty, which was a real scourge at the time. Between child labour in disguise, corporal punishment and vagrancy, it was a veritable battle for public health, encouraged by the then Minister of Justice. To illustrate the poster, a real children's trade that also inspired Andersen's famous fairy tale, The Little Match Girl.
