Description
Tourism - André Bermond (1911-1989) - The Casino Municipal, Bandol. 1930. Printed by Moullot, Marseille. 99x62cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas-backed. Condition A-, a small trace of vertical tear in the lower margin. References: Riviera 426; Sportissimo p. 135.
Having become a seaside resort in 1923, this small village in the Var was quick to take advantage of the tourism bonanza. To this end, it built a casino, still in existence today, which opened in 1930 and has now been bought by Partouche. The village also developed water sports, thanks to the local weather conditions. It was in this context that this poster was commissioned. It's still remarkable, though, because in the foreground we see a woman in a swimming costume, but in addition she's practising the ancestor of water skiing and a variant of surfing, the hydroplane, popularised in the 1920s by Alpine hunters on Lake Annecy. So for many reasons, a historic poster for the Cote d'Azur.
