Description
Tourism - Jean-Charles Contel (1895-1928) - State railway. Lisieux, world centre of pilgrimage 1923. Printer Gaillac Monrocq, Paris. 100x62cm. Original poster, lithograph, not canvas-backed. Condition A-, small tears at the end of the margins.
This poster shows the Rue aux Févres as it was before it was bombed during the Second World War in 1944, with its typical half-timbered houses. This town in the Calvados region of Normandy is also renowned for its worship of and pilgrimage to Sainte Thérèse. The street flourished in the Middle Ages, when it became the street of metal craftsmen.
