Bikinis were banned on certain beaches in France in 1949 before Brigitte Bardot was photographed in a bikini at the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. This poster is also a true work of photographic art. Karl MACHATSCHEK was born on 26 August 1906 in Teschen, then in Austria-Hungary, which became Cieszyn in 1919, in Poland. After finishing secondary school, he learned lithography and the printing trade from his father. In 1929, he joined the Académie Libre de Peinture in Montparnasse. In 1947-48, he worked as an advertising illustrator before turning to photography (for Éperon magazine, posters for the Office National du Tourisme, illustrations, the AIR FRANCE calendar, the Touring Club de France, Reader's Digest, and many others).
