Tourism - Jean Jacquelin (1905-1989) - Compagnie Générale Transatlantique - SS France. Circa 1962. 99x62cm, printed by Baille, Paris. Original poster, lithograph, canvas covered. Condition A-, tiny traces of tears at the end of the left margin, with very minor restorations.
The poster shows the liner France gliding across the Atlantic in front of a large tricolour flag, promoting the French Line's crossings between Le Havre and New York; geographical and heritage references: Saint-Nazaire (built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique), the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty; emblem of the French maritime revival of the 1960s. She was 316 m long, making her the longest passenger ship ever built until 2004. She was the flagship of the French fleet until 1974, when she ceased service. She was then sold to Norwegian Cruise Line in 1979, renamed SS Norway, converted into a cruise ship and demolished in 2008. The launch of the SS France in 1960 was hailed by General de Gaulle, who described it as a "new Normandie".
