Description
Politics - Anonymous, illegible signature - Jeder Volkspolizist, Ein Sportler. Circa 1950 Printed by Schütze. 84x60cm. Original poster, lithograph, canvas-backed. Condition A-, two small traces of marginal tears, bottom right corner extremity restored.
This text reads: The policeman of all peoples, an athlete! This rare poster refers to the importance of the police in East Germany. The People's Police existed from 1945 to 1990, i.e. from the end of the Second World War in the zone occupied by the USSR. You can see its badge. It fulfilled the role of community policing and maintaining order, while working closely with the Stasi. It is interesting to note the aesthetic similarity between these posters and those used for Communist propaganda in Vietnam. The sporting nature of our subject perhaps echoes the club SG Volkspolizei Potsdam (1948-1952), whose football section included a well-known player, Günter Schröter.
