Description
Tourism - Philippe Fronval () - France, Pyrenees, Dancers in the Basque Country. Circa 1960. Printer Victor Michel, Paris. 99x63cm. Original poster, offset, not canvas-backed. Condition A.
The Northern Basque Country, known in Basque as Iparralde, is the part of the Basque Country that lies on French soil. It represents the northern portion of the Basque Country, encompassing the three historic Basque provinces of Labourd, Soule and Basse-Navarre. It is also the western section of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. As for the printer of this poster, the Michel family has, following a family tradition, dedicated its attention to the graphic arts. Charles-Joseph Alexandre-François-Victor obtained his first printer's licence in 1811, and it was he who succeeded him in 1827. In 1911, his sons Victor and Paul continued his legacy by setting up an offset workshop and a rotogravure printing plant. The printing works were located on rue Duguay-Trouin in Paris. The company started out in printing, then with the emergence of galvanotyping, it moved into what was incorrectly called clicherie (it produced all the galvanos for the great Larousse and the Encyclopédie du XXe siècle). Later, it specialised in photoengraving, before finally moving into magazine printing. In 1989, Mr V.P. Victor-Michel handed over the archives of Les Fils de Victor-Michel to the National Archives, registered under reference 203 AQ.
