Description
A large lyre-shaped clock in white marble, richly decorated with chiselled bronze featuring rows of pearls, friezes of oak leaves and floral motifs ending in scrollwork. Quantième string movement; enamelled dial displaying the hours in Roman numerals, the minutes in Arabic numerals in increments of five, the date in Arabic numerals and the days of the week. Dial signed ‘FARJAIRE’. Hour hand in the shape of a fleur-de-lis. This clock rests on its display stand, which features the same decoration and has spinning-top legs. Late Louis XVI period, early Revolutionary period. Total height 51 cm; base dimensions 36 x 13.5 cm.
Farjaire is known to have worked from his shop at 18 Rue de Bourgogne until at least 1820.
Sold with its glass dome resting on a wooden plinth. A small chip on a row of beads at the back of the stand, a slight misalignment of a row of beads on one side of the clock, and red fabric on the rear cover of the movement, which has probably been added later.
