Description
Fernand ALLARD L'OLIVIER (1883–1933). The Albertville in Matadi. Oil on panel. Probably painted in 1932, the work is still carefully set in its original frame, commissioned by the artist himself. Oil on panel. During his second trip to the Congo, the artist arrived on the Albertville from Antwerp in December 1932 and stayed in Matadi for three days to paint. He painted nine pochades (on wood, approximately 27 x 35) featuring the name ‘Matadi’, which were put up for sale in Elisabethville in March 1933. One of them is entitled ‘L’Anversville à Matadi’.
