Description
Paul DELVAUX (1897–1994). Untitled. Unsigned double-sided gouache. Circa 1922. Isy Brachot inventory no. B.267. This is a typical example of the works the artist produced at the start of his artistic career. This was a good ten years before his Surrealist period; he devoted himself to depicting the working-class world through illustrations of various trades. The Paul Delvaux Foundation holds several examples of this kind in its archives; we also find a similar work sold on the art market: “Les paveurs” (c. 1922), sold at the Servarts auction house in Brussels on 1 December 2003. We would like to thank the Paul Delvaux Museum Foundation for the information they have kindly provided regarding this work. Provenance: Belgian private collection. Exhibition: “Paul Delvaux, 90th Anniversary: Drawings, Watercolours and Indian Ink Drawings”, held from 23 September to 5 December 1987 at the Galerie Isy Brachot on Avenue Louise in Brussels. Enclosed is the duplicate certificate of authenticity drawn up by Isy Brachot III, dated 17 November 1987. We are also enclosing a photograph of the artist contemplating his works at the exhibition, the Brachot list of exhibited works with their inventory numbers, and the invitation card for the opening on Wednesday 23 September 1987. Dimensions: 34 x 26.5 / 33.6 x 33 cm. Resale rights apply.
