Photograph album of Captain Jeffcoat, 17th Bomb Group – 12th Air Force – North Africa, Sardinia, Corsica, France (47 original photographs) Officer in charge of the 17th Bomb Group’s photographic laboratory within the 12th Air Force. This unit is particularly famous for having carried out the very first raid on Japan on 18 April 1942 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel James H. Doolittle, taking off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in B-25 Mitchell aircraft. Following this feat, it was the very first unit to be equipped with B-26 Marauders, twin-engine medium bombers. As such, it was nicknamed ‘The Daddy of Them All’. The 17th Bomb Group was based in North Africa, Sardinia and then Corsica before being stationed in Dijon until Germany’s surrender. This album contains 47 photographs in various formats, ranging from the famous 4x5 in. (10x12.5 cm) or 8x10 in. (20×25 cm) to larger square formats. It also includes smaller prints taken with a civilian camera showing the decorations adorning the noses of the aircraft, commonly referred to by enthusiasts as ‘nose art’. These photographs were taken during operations both on the ground and in flight, and show air strikes, notably on road and railway bridges. An interesting detail: a large-format photograph shows a damaged B-26 Marauder (No. 17 on the vertical stabiliser) with an engine hanging loose, from which the crew are jettisoning everything they can to save weight and maintain their altitude and speed. A ammunition belt can be seen being thrown out of the rear side window. The photographs show several American airfields as well as a vertical view of the Trocadéro and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Several photographs are captioned with information obtained from a veteran of this unit. Also included is a short guide to North Africa distributed to American troops to familiarise them with local customs and traditions, as well as an article recounting the mission on the Roccasecca bridge on 30 December 1943.
