Photograph album of Sergeant John J. Masko, 17th Bomb Group – 12th Air Force – North Africa, Sardinia, Corsica, France (over 400 original photographs) This non-commissioned officer was posted to the administrative department of the 37th Bomb Squadron of the 17th Bomb Group within the 12th Air Force. What makes this collection unique is that Sgt Masko accompanied the unit throughout its entire deployment, from the training period in the USA (at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana) right up to the Armistice in 1945, when the unit was stationed in Dijon. The photographs are extremely varied. This large-format album begins with a photograph showing the insignia of the 37th Bombardment Squadron. It is accompanied by Sergeant Masko’s handwritten notebooks, personal records, press cuttings, and a large number of original photographs that were not mounted in the album, including one taken from the air above a fleet of ships, presumably on the day of the Provence landings on 15 August 1944. It also features pieces of furniture made from parts of German aircraft destroyed in North Africa, a number of crews posing in front of their aircraft decorated with nose art, Roman and Egyptian ruins, the eruption of Vesuvius in March 1944, military variety shows, the pin-up murals on the walls of the squadron mess, a magazine published at Barksdale Air Force Base to mark the 1943 Christmas celebrations, invitations distributed to young French women after the Armistice, a history of the 37th Bomb Squadron, and a report in French on the crash of a French aircraft in North Africa on 18 March 1943. In total, there are over 400 photographs, with the album itself containing 245. This collection is accompanied by a historical book on the 17th Bomb Group in English, published by Turner in the USA.
