Photograph album of Staff Sergeant Jack A. Bingaman, 95th Bomb Group – 8th Air Force – England (55 original photographs) This non-commissioned officer served as a gunner on a B-17 with the 95th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in England, which was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses. The cover of the album is adorned with an 8th Air Force insignia known as ‘stubby wings’, typical of the 1943–1944 period. Bingaman was a belly turret gunner and was taken prisoner of war (POW) on 3 February 1945 when his aircraft was shot down during a raid on Berlin. It was his 34th and penultimate mission to complete his tour of duty (the number of missions increased from 25 to 35 in 1945). Research carried out with the 95th Bomb Group Association has established a list of his missions, which he began in August 1944 as part of Lt. Taylor’s crew, and shows that he flew on various aircraft. It was common for aircraft not to be assigned to a specific crew. Around a third of the missions were carried out on the same aircraft. The PDF files detailing his missions, together with the MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) obtained from the US archives, as well as the history of the 95th Bomb Group, will be provided to the successful bidder. S/Sgt Bingaman was identified from various photographs in which he can be recognised, whether during a FRANTIC mission – on which their formation landed in Poltava after bombing Germany from the USSR – or by his belly turret whilst fitting the machine-gun barrels, or with his colleagues at the nose of their aircraft, or around the aircraft, and finally his portrait in flight uniform. A request for the identification of one of the crew members – Lt Allen V. Beers, a bombardier in Bingaman’s crew, was made by his daughter via the 95th BG Association’s magazine, enabling the crew and S/Sgt Bingaman to be identified based on the crew list.
