Photograph album of Staff Sergeant Frank G. Highley, 95th Bomb Group – 8th Air Force – England (74 original photographs) This non-commissioned officer served as a tail gunner in Lieutenant Schaaf’s crew, attached to the 95th Bomb Group – 336th Bomb Squadron. His identification details in English accompanied his album, along with a post-war portrait of him. The list of his missions was reconstructed via the website dedicated to the 95th Bomb Group. Highley flew 31 combat missions from 14 January 1945 until the end of hostilities. In early May 1945, he took part in two missions to supply food to the Dutch population, who were suffering from a famine orchestrated by the Germans in retaliation against the Dutch. The album contains a photograph of Lt. Schaaf’s crew, dated 25 March 1945, featuring portraits of the crew members in their flight uniforms. They are then seen whilst on leave in England playing golf, horse-riding and clay-pigeon shooting, presumably during a rest period at a Flak House. These houses were specifically set aside for American airmen in England to help them cope with the post-traumatic stress of combat missions against German anti-aircraft defences (Flak). The men also pose next to their aircraft, showing the back of an A-2 leather jacket decorated with a painted design.
