Photograph album of Staff Sergeant Leonard E. Kelly, 306th Bomb Group – 8th Air Force – England (95 original photographs) This non-commissioned officer served as a tail gunner on a B-17 as part of Lt Underwood’s crew, but he also flew a number of missions with other crews, such as those of Lt Claeys and Capt Matzke. A portrait photograph of him in a small cardboard frame accompanies the album. Kelly flew 30 combat missions between September 1944 and March 1945. His photo album is accompanied by a small notebook in which he recorded a list of all his missions. All the photographs in the album are captioned, and Kelly has listed all the places he stayed in white ink, including his time in England. Some of the photographs accompanying the album have not been glued inside it. The album contains several propaganda leaflets written in German, some of which imitate the front pages of daily newspapers featuring various articles. Documents of this kind are relatively rare as they were scattered during operations. Some airmen kept them as souvenirs. The album also contains the award documents for the Air Medal, and the additional awards (OLC Oak Leaf Cluster). A crew photograph taken at the end of their training in Louisiana features the names of all the crew members of which he was a part, starting with the pilot: Lieutenant Habert E. Underwood. This photograph was sent to Kelly’s wife. Copies of the combat mission reports in which Kelly’s name appears will be handed over to the successful bidder. These documents were obtained from the 306th Bomb Group Veterans’ Association a few years ago and have been supplemented more recently.
