Description
Photograph album of Lt James V. Rutledge, 312th Bomb Group – 5th Air Force – New Guinea (156 original photographs)
This pilot officer was posted to the 389th Bomb Squadron within the 312th Bomb Group, the famous ‘Roarin’ 20’s’. This unit operated in the Pacific, where it was based first in New Guinea and then in the Philippines.
This album contains a historical booklet about the unit dated October 1944, the cover of which is illustrated with caricatures, followed by a whole gallery of pilots’ portraits, some of which are captioned. Several photographs, presumably taken in the Philippines, show street scenes, monuments and destroyed buildings. They show American airmen playing baseball, group photographs and scenes of medal ceremonies. A few photographs depict the nose art on A-20 Boston or Havoc aircraft, as well as pilots standing beside their planes.
Several photographs illustrate the basic living conditions of these men whilst on operations, before concluding with two photographs of an A-20 Havoc that has made a belly landing, presumably in the USA during the training period.
A brief history of the 312th Bomb Group is included.
Also included is a book on the 5th Air Force published by Turner, comprising biographies, unit histories, anecdotes and numerous photographs.
