Description
Anonymous photo album, 462nd Bomb Group – 20th Air Force – Pacific – Mariana Islands (68 original photographs)
This album likely belonged to a crew member of a B-29 Superfortress, as photographs of the same man appear in succession throughout the pages. However, he could not be identified.
The 462nd BG was initially stationed in India, then in the Mariana Islands, on the island of Tinian, as part of the strategic bombing campaign against Japan.
The album contains around twenty examples of nose art painted on the noses of the B-29s.
The owner of this album was likely assigned to the aircraft named ‘THUNDERBIRD’, of which several photographs appear with different tail markings: early markings from when the unit was based in India (an ‘X’ at the top of the tail fin), and markings from when the unit was based on Tinian (a black triangle).
This photograph appears to show the crew of the album’s owner.
Several photographs show B-29s flying in formation during missions, over Japan near Mount Fuji, and on their return to Tinian, where their base is visible on the ground. One also shows a B-29 with its bomb bays open as it drops its payload. The final pages show B-29s on their aprons at Tinian, B-29s from other units (notably the 6th Bomb Group), and an interesting aerial view taken directly above the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945 for the signing of the Armistice.
