Description
Photograph album of Ensign Harold P. Berry Jr, Pensacola Naval Air Station, United States (146 original photographs)
This album belonged to Ensign Berry, who was a single-engine aircraft instructor at Pensacola, one of the largest naval air stations in the United States, where a large number of US Navy pilots were trained.
This fully captioned album is packed with photos of SNJs (the naval version of the famous T-6) as well as Berry’s fellow airmen.
The first few pages contain a piece of fuselage that Berry removed from an SNJ with which he made an emergency landing. The caption refers to the character Dilbert, who appears throughout the training manuals in humorous cartoons intended for pilots. Clearly, Berry paid the price for failing to fasten all the straps on his harness. A few photographs show other aircraft such as the OS2U Kingfisher and the SNV (the naval version of the BT-13), nicknamed ‘Vibrator’ by the trainee pilots.
The album illustrates the daily life and leisure activities of these young pilots, who represented the elite of American aviation. A press article reports on Berry’s marriage to a ‘Wave’ (a female officer in the US Navy). A few photographs show his wife in uniform and the Berry couple in uniform in May 1944, then in civilian clothes with their two children.
