Description
Anonymous photo album, VT-81 US NAVY – Pacific (81 original photographs)
The owner of this album is not identified, apart from his face (portrait) and his first name, Freddy, mentioned on the photograph autographed by the starlet Sherry Button inside the album.
The squadron is identified by the markings on the fuselages of the TBF Avengers in flight: for example, 81-T-7 identifies aircraft No. 7 of Torpedo Squadron No. 81, and thus VT-81.
This squadron saw combat from November 1944 in the Philippines, then in the South China Sea and Formosa, before carrying out attack missions against Japan in February 1945 and taking part in the landing on Iwo Jima, only to be withdrawn from operations in March 1945.
This album contains photographs all taken during the training phase at Quonset Point airbase in the Long Island area on the east coast of the USA between May and August 1944, prior to the squadron’s deployment to combat. These photographs depict the men’s daily lives, with their girlfriends proudly wearing their fiancés’ M-422a leather jackets, and the airmen posing in front of their aircraft or in the cockpits of the Avengers. A whole series of photographs was taken in Hawaii in early October 1944 whilst the squadron was making a stopover there, prior to its deployment into combat. A photograph of the famous actor Bob Hope accompanies those of Jeannie, who appears to be Freddy’s girlfriend.
The photograph of Lt(jg) Hoppers’ (pilot) crew, captioned ‘Super Crew’, precedes two photographs, one of which shows the album’s owner in flight gear leaning on a landing gear strut of an Avenger on the flight deck of the Natoma Bay, and a portrait of a pilot in the cockpit of an Avenger—who must surely be the pilot himself, though there is no specific caption to that effect. Finally, six photographs, showing Avenger crew members wearing their belly parachutes around their aircraft, accompany a small handbook of Hawaiian slang.
The covers of this album are decorated with decals typical of the period, featuring, in particular, Hawaiian dancers and a TBF Avenger.
