Description
Personal collection of Captain Charles A. Schwiegman, 483rd Bomb Group – 15th Air Force – Italy (17 original photographs, Combat Record file, press cuttings, insignia, ‘Blood Chit’ identity card)
Captain Schwiegman was posted to the 840th Bomb Squadron as a B-17 pilot, where he flew 35 combat missions between July 1944 and March 1945.
All his ‘Individual Flight Record’ sheets detailing his missions are included in his file provided by the 483rd Bomb Group, which forms part of this lot, along with his pilot’s licence in sterling silver (manufacturer’s mark: AE.CO, Utica, New York), his 15th Air Force identity card, featuring an American eagle, a flag and a message in several languages to enable him to seek assistance from the civilian population in the event of a landing in an occupied zone, and his pilot’s identity card. Several original photographs accompany this lot.
Schwiegman notably took part in the landings in Provence, carrying out two missions: one on Toulon on 14 August 1944 targeting coastal artillery positions, and the other on 16 August on a railway bridge at Valence (erroneously located in Italy by his unit in the summary document of his tour of operations). A photograph of his crew, reduced to six members, bears the names of each of the men on the back and states that the rest of the crew (gunners) were on leave. His instrument flight rating certificate is accompanied by his 15th Air Force identity card, which bears an American eagle, a flag and a message in several languages to enable him to seek assistance from the civilian population in the event of a landing in occupied territory. This 15th Air Force identity card is a particularly prized memento amongst airmen.
Schwiegman’s personnel file begins with a list of his missions from 30 July 1944 to 25 March 1945 and continues with another print of the photograph of his crew posing in front of their B-17G; the PSP number plates can be seen on the ground. The file continues with an account of the mission to Memingen on 18 July 1944, which proved particularly gruelling for the 483rd BG; the unit was awarded a citation, which follows this account.
The history of the 483rd BG is also included. Several certificates bearing the US emblem and issued in Schwiegman’s name accompany this collection, along with more recent documents (dated 1995) detailing Schwiegman’s career. These are likely documents compiled by the 483rd BG’s historian, in which Schwiegman’s missions have been highlighted. Several large-format square photographs taken during missions show the targets flown over, with the bomb craters visible on the ground.
Other period documents include Schwiegman’s four-engine pilot’s qualification certificate and his individual B-17 pilot qualification record, detailing all aspects of his training, his awards of the Air Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster and other decorations, his promotion to the rank of Captain on 21 December 1944, and his monthly ‘Individual Flight Record’ forms.
