Description
Dorothy Johnson’s personal collection, American Red Cross – France – Paris (approx. 100 original photographs, badges, flag)
This collection belonged to an American Red Cross nurse who was stationed in the Paris region, specifically in Villejuif, which was home to the US 191st General Hospital.
This building now houses the Paul Guiraud psychiatric hospital.
This collection comprises over 100 original photographs showing Dorothy Johnson visiting various tourist attractions in Paris, Versailles and the châteaux of the Loire Valley, as well as photographs taken before her departure for the United States in which her uniforms and insignia are clearly identifiable.
This collection includes various metal and fabric insignia, ranging from the Nurse’s officer’s insignia—featuring a caduceus with the letter N— to the ARC shoulder badge seen in various photographs, and two enamelled ARC Volunteer badges, one of which is numbered on its backing card with the same number.
The most iconic item is her American flag printed on cotton, on which she inscribed: ‘This flag was carried on my Jeep in France and Belgium between 1944 and 1946’. One photograph also shows a Jeep completely covered with a tarpaulin bearing American Red Cross markings. A photograph showing Dorothy Johnson at the door of a C-47 suggests that she likely took part in medical evacuations from Orly aerodrome.
