An antique and rare counter lighter or cigar lighter from the late 19th century, made of regule. A humorous or caricatured item often placed on bar counters, salons or tobacconists’ during the Third Republic, to enable customers to light their pipes and cigars. The figure wears a top hat mounted on a hinge, concealing a mechanism or a wick reservoir from which emerged the large metal cigar used to produce the flame.
