Description
PRECIOUS and EMOUVING period PHOTOGRAPHY "in its original state", representing all the Félibres of the flamboyant period of this great intellectual and literary movement that was the Félibrige in the 19th century (23x20 cm). Accompanied by a handwritten document on the letterhead of the Comité St Lazare in Avignon, on which appears by hand "Frederi Mistral legi Calendau a sis amis. Avignon, 1866". On this document each Félibre bears a number corresponding to his place around Mistral: Félix Gras, Bonaparte-Wyse, F. Mistral, Brunel, Balaguer, Reboul, Matieu, Aubanel, Crousillat, Grivolas, Roumieux, Roumanille, Brunel fils. At the bottom of the document is a curious comment: "13 Grivolas, turns his back: 1° not being a Félibre, he does not want to be recognised 2° as there are 13 of them not recognising him, there will only be 12 left". With a "Lamy" signature. René Jouveau dates this photograph to 3 January 1867, on the occasion of a banquet organised by Bonaparte-Wyse, and writes in his work on the Félibréen movement (p. 204): "It was then that the well-known photograph was taken, showing Mistral reading Calendau, Mylord (Bonaparte-Wyse) wearing his coat supposedly made of 24 cat skins, and Grivolas turning his back because he was the only one not to write verse". To thank the Provençal Félibres for their welcome, the Catalans from Balaguer offered a symbolic cup the following year, which was greeted by a song composed by Mistral, the famous "Coupo Santo", which became the "Marseillaise Félibréenne" (E. Ripert).
