Description
RAVÉREAU, André.
Captifs. Eighteen engravings with a foreword by Georges Duhamel.
Paris, Éditions des Horizons de France, [circa 1950].
Small folio in loose sheets, with a printed cover, slipcase and case, illustrated with 18 magnificent engravings. A single print run of 330 numbered copies on Johannot rag vellum; this copy bears the number 194 and is signed by the artist.
A sought-after collection, bringing together drawings produced by André Ravéreau during his captivity, subsequently engraved by Raymond Haasen, and accompanied by a foreword by Georges Duhamel. The work forms part of the post-war illustrated tradition and derives much of its appeal from the documentary and human power of its subject matter.
A fine, numbered copy of this limited edition, sought after for the quality of its illustrations, the artist’s signature and the moving simplicity of its inspiration.
* André Ravéreau is also known for his perspective on Mediterranean and Saharan architecture, notably in the M’Zab and Algiers.
Good condition: a few foxing spots on some of the engravings; case damaged
Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
