Description
GUÉRIN-MENNEVILLE, F.-E. (ed.).
A Pictorial Dictionary of Natural History and Natural Phenomena, containing the history of animals, plants, minerals, meteorites, the principal physical phenomena and natural curiosities.
Paris, at the Subscription Office, 1833–1839.
A set of 9 quarto volumes, lavishly illustrated with 719 engraved plates (out of 720), most of which are coloured or printed in bistre; plate 670 is missing from volume IX. The work, compiled by a society of naturalists under the direction of F.-E. Guérin-Méneville, was published between 1833 and 1839.
Volume I: 80 plates, VIII + 640 pp.; Volume II: 80 plates, 640 pp.; Volume III: 80 plates, 640 pp.; Volume IV: 80 plates, 640 pp.; Volume V: 80 plates, 640 pp.; Volume VI: 80 plates, 640 pp., with explanations of the plates on pp. 439–443, p. 562; Volume VII: 80 plates, 640 pp.; Volume VIII: 80 plates, 640 pp.; Volume IX: 79 plates (plate 670 missing), 664 pp. + 12 pp. of tables. That is a total of 5,804 pages and 719 plates.
An important scholarly popularisation work from the early 19th century, remarkable for the scope of its iconographic programme. The plates, engraved on steel from drawings by de Sainson, the illustrator of the Astrolabe expedition, are one of the work’s main attractions and explain the enduring popularity of this great encyclopaedia of natural history.
A fine reference set, decorative and sought-after, despite the absence of one plate in the final volume.
Good condition for its age: spine of Volume 1 detached, and partially detached on Volume IV; covers and spines rubbed; interior fresh (magnificent plates)
Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
