Description
MEIJER, Jan. Socrates, the Last Breath. Paris, Éditions la Mata (Galerie la Pochade), [circa 1974–1975]. Album comprising 12 plates, with a colour cover and centre spread, and an original silkscreen print. A series by Jan Meijer on the theme of ‘Socrates, the Last Breath’, published by Éditions la Mata, in a format combining black-and-white plates with colour inserts. These original carborundum engravings were inspired by the *Phaedo* and by Socrates’ final moments: in them, Jan Meijer translates the themes of sacrifice, simplicity and spiritual elevation into a lyrical language. Included are: - the Artmosphère V catalogue, a painting exhibition featuring several artists (Bacon, Bradley, Chaissac, Pelayo, Colvin and Jan Meijer), held from 17 November to 8 December 1988 in Neuilly, - the invitation card for this exhibition, - two illustrated advertisements for a private viewing of Jan Meijer’s work at the Protée Gallery (12 March – 2 April 1987) In fairly good condition. Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
