GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von. Faust, a tragedy by Goethe. A new complete translation in prose and verse, by Gérard [de Nerval]. Paris, Veuve Dondey-Dupré, 1835 (1836 on the cover). In-12, XII+320 pp., frontispiece. Second edition of Gérard de Nerval’s famous translation of Faust, known as the ‘blue edition’, following the original published in 1828. This version, regarded as one of the major milestones in the reception of Goethe in France, firmly established Nerval as a key figure in the transmission of German Romanticism. The volume is adorned with a frontispiece etching by Leleux after Rembrandt (portrait of Faust). It is one of the most sought-after editions of this seminal translation, both for its literary significance and for its place in the history of intellectual exchange between Germany and France in the 19th century.
