Description
RABELAIS, François. The Complete Works of Maître François Rabelais. Paris, Imprimerie nationale / Nouvelle Librairie de France, 1957. Set of 5 in-8 volumes, bound in full red leather, with grey moiré cloth endpapers and half-leather, gilt head edges, comprising: *Pantagruel*, *Gargantua*, *The Third Book*, *The Fourth Book* and *The Fifth Book*. Edition prepared and annotated by Marcel Guilbaud, in collaboration with Robert Baudry. Copy no. 41 ‘with illustrations’, printed on Lafuma Frères rag paper, combining typographical quality, meticulous critical apparatus and a bibliophile’s presentation (vignettes and end-piece illustrations). A fine library set, decorative and in good condition, bringing together in an elegant presentation one of the great foundational texts of French literature. Beneath the giants’ boisterousness and comic verve, Rabelais examines education, knowledge, freedom and religious or political powers. In very fine condition, lacking the series of drawings and the two original woodcuts, and without the portfolio of 66 illustrative documents mentioned in the colophon. Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
