Beautiful full marbled calfskin binding, covers decorated with a floral frieze, plain spine with title and volume number labels, gilt edges. Volume IV only, comprising 48 pages of introduction, followed by 12 instalments (nos. 37–48) featuring 72 engravings (nos. 217–288) in folios (complete). An important publication devoted to the collections of the Musée Napoléon, at a time when the museum was assembling an exceptional collection of paintings and sculptures at the Louvre. The series, published by the engraver Filhol and written by Lavallée, is one of the great illustrated collections devoted to the museum’s masterpieces in the early 19th century. This Volume IV brings together 72 engravings accompanied by their explanatory notes. It offers an overview of the works then held at the Musée Napoléon, combining paintings from the major European schools, religious, mythological and historical subjects, and examples of ancient sculpture. Lavallée’s texts place each work within its artistic context, identifying the masters, the schools and the key elements of interpretation. In good overall condition: corners slightly worn, interior fresh (few foxing spots) Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
