Description
GEORGES-MICHEL, Michel.
The Ballets Russes: An Anecdotal History, followed by an appendix and the poem ‘Scheherazade’.
Paris: Éditions du Monde Nouveau, 1923.
8vo, half-leather bound, 93 pp., illustrated with reproductions of two drawings by Picasso. First edition printed in a run of 500 copies, of which 15 were on Lafuma pure-fibre paper and 485 on alfa paper; unnumbered copy.
A short work contemporary with the Ballets Russes’s heyday, published in 1923 whilst Diaghilev was still alive, and more akin to a first-hand account than a historical study. In it, Michel Georges-Michel captures the artistic and social atmosphere created by the company, whose performances profoundly transformed the relationship between dance, music, set design and painting. The inclusion of two drawings by Picasso adds to the appeal of this volume devoted to one of the major phenomena of the early 20th-century theatrical avant-garde.
Good condition for its age: worn corners, interior in good condition.
Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
