Description
ROYAL ACADEMY OF SURGERY.
Proceedings of the Royal Academy of Surgery. Volume One.
Paris: published by Charles Osmont, 1743.
Large quarto, XL pp. of preface and table of contents, 778 pp., with an engraved frontispiece and 20 engraved folding plates (complete), labelled from A to V (omitting J and U in accordance with old typographical convention).
First edition of the first volume of this important collection published under the authority of the Royal Academy of Surgery, one of the great monuments of 18th-century French medical literature.
The volume brings together 28 treatises and observations devoted to major surgical cases and problems: the theory of suppuration, tumours, gangrene, trepanation, skull and brain wounds, haemorrhages, hernias, difficult deliveries, fistulas, bladder stones, caesarean section, cleft lip, foreign bodies in the oesophagus or trachea, abscesses and chancereous tumours. The contributions are by several leading figures in the field of surgery of the time, notably Quesnay, Petit, La Peyronie, Puzos, Ledran, Hevin, Foubert and Garangeot.
The fold-out plates, essential for understanding the observations and surgical procedures, enhance the documentary value of this seminal volume for the history of French surgery.
Good condition: covers scuffed, spine rubbed, corners worn, small areas of leather missing, interior fresh.
Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
