Description
GARNIER, Édouard.
Soft Porcelain of Sèvres. 50 plates reproducing 250 watercolour designs based on the originals, with a historical note.
Paris, Maison Quantin, n.d. [circa 1889–1891].
Large folio, 31 pages of text, complete with all 50 sumptuous colour plates, in chromolithography, sometimes enhanced with gold.
Sèvres soft-paste porcelain, originating from the earliest productions at Vincennes and later at Sèvres in the 18th century, was one of the great expressions of French decorative luxury under Louis XV. Less hard than hard-paste porcelain, it offered a surface particularly suited to painted decorations, coloured backgrounds, bouquets, birds, cartouches, borders and gold highlights.
The 50 plates in Garnier’s volume, reproducing 250 watercolour designs based on the originals, thus constitute a valuable decorative catalogue of this refined production, providing a subtle documentation of the ornamental vocabulary of the Sèvres porcelain manufactory.
A luxury publication from the late 19th century, typical of the major collections of decorative arts published by Maison Quantin, and highly sought after by collectors of ceramics, fired arts and illustrated bibliophilia.
Good condition inside; the clasps of the cloth-bound portfolio are split.
