GROTIUS, Hugo. The Law of War and Peace. New translation by Jean Barbeyrac, with the author’s own notes, which had not yet been published in French, and new notes by the translator. New edition, based on a copy considerably corrected, revised and expanded by Mr J. Barbeyrac himself. Basel: Emanuel Tourneisen, 1768. 2 volumes in-4, contemporary binding in full marbled calfskin, spine with decorated raised bands – Volume I: XXXII pp., 516 pp.; Volume II: 471 pp. followed by the table of contents. Title printed in red and black, with an engraved vignette. A fine engraved ex-libris bearing the coat of arms: ‘ex-libris abbatis d’Huteau vicarii generalis’. Marbled endpapers and edges. An important French edition of one of the seminal texts on natural law and the law of nations, in the classic version by Jean Barbeyrac, whose annotated translation has long been regarded as authoritative. Grotius’s treatise (Hugues de Groot, the great Dutch jurist and diplomat, 1583–1645), first published in the 17th century, remains one of the major works in the history of European political, legal and diplomatic thought.
