Description
FRANK, Othmar.
Grammatica sanskrita.
Printed in Würzburg at the author’s expense; published in Leipzig by Friedrich Fleischer, 1823.
In-4, contemporary full grained calfskin binding, plain spine – XVI + 219 pages, with 10 plates – Title in Latin and Devanagari script. Stamp on the title page from the Jesuit Seminary at Vals.
German first edition of this Sanskrit grammar by Othmar Frank, one of the first German Orientalists to have contributed to the spread of Sanskrit studies in Europe. The title indeed states: ‘nunc primum in Germania’, emphasising the pioneering nature of the work in Germany.
The work, written in scholarly Latin, dates from the early days of European Indology and bears witness to the rise of comparative studies of Oriental languages in the early 19th century. It is illustrated with plates, some of which are fold-out, which enhance the scientific and bibliographical interest of this publication.
Good condition for its age: leather binding worn, corners worn, interior fresh.
Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
