Description
SILIUS ITALICUS, Caius. Seventeen Books on the Carthaginians. With excerpts from the lectures of Franciscus Modius of Novanta, and the counter-arguments of Caspar Barthius, as well as Daniel Heinsius’s ‘Crepundiis Silianis’ and the posthumous notes of Nicolaus Heinsius, published here for the first time, edited by Arnoldus Drakenborch, whose own annotations have also been added throughout. Utrecht: Guilielmus Vande Water, 1717. A substantial in-4 volume, in a contemporary full stiff vellum binding, with a ribbed spine; the covers framed by a gilt fillet with a gilt coat of arms in the centre – Frontispiece, title printed in red and black, with an engraved vignette. Illustrations in the text and 8 plates at the end. 880 pages plus index. An important scholarly edition of Silius Italicus, a Latin poet of the 1st century AD, author of the *Punica*, a vast epic in seventeen books devoted to the Second Punic War and the conflict between Rome and Carthage, centred on the figures of Hannibal and Scipio. This edition, edited by Arnold Drakenborch, is enriched by the readings, remarks and notes of several eminent scholars, including Modius, Caspar Barth, Daniel Heinsius and Nicolas Heinsius. It constitutes an important critical and annotated edition in the history of the scholarly tradition of Silius Italicus, and remains a substantial reference work for classical studies. Silius Italicus (c. 26–101 AD) occupies a unique place in Latin literature: his poem, drawing on Virgil and Livy, is one of the great poetic accounts of Roman history and of the epic treatment of the Punic Wars during the Imperial period. Good condition: covers scuffed, pages fresh. Expert: Mr Geoffroi PICARD DU CHAMBON
