Paris, Vitré, 1646, in-4, 18th-century calf, ribbed spine with two intertwined gilt initials ‘PS’ (Plessis-Sorbonne) in the panels, reproduced at the corners of the covers, gilt edges
FIRST EDITION. Featuring the central gilded coat of arms of the Collège du Plessis Sorbonne, formed in honour of Richelieu (which explains the presence of the thirty acorns (known as ‘fiocchi’) and the anchor of the Grand Admiral of France). This college was abolished during the Revolution. It is now known as the Collège Louis le Grand.
Contents: half-title page, frontispiece title page engraved by Mellan, 2 folios of dedication, 2 folios of a notice to the reader, 1 folio of the King’s privilege, 3 folios of a preface, and 2 folios of a table of contents.
The first flyleaf and the first 3 ff. are slightly damaged in the central margins
