Description
STENDHAL (Henri Beyle, known as): *The Red and the Black*.
Paris, A. Levavasseur, Bookseller, Palais Royal, 1831, 2 in-8 volumes, in period midnight-blue glazed half-calf, smooth spines, richly decorated with gilt fillets representing the book’s ribs and four cold-stamped rosettes between them, marbled edges, endpapers to match.
FIRST EDITION, of exceptional rarity, of Stendhal’s masterpiece. Clouzot, p. 151 – Ansel: Dictionnaire de Stendhal, pp. 630–637.
Collected edition: Vol. 1: 3 leaves (half-title, title page, colophon and 398 pp.; Vol. 2: 2 leaves (title page and half-title), 486 pp. and 1 leaf (author’s note). The colophon and the page with the author’s note, which are often missing, are both present.
Vignettes on the title pages by H. Monnier, engraved by Porret.
A fine copy, notwithstanding a few slight, insignificant scuffs on the spines of the bindings and foxing common to all known copies. An old, skilful and discreet restoration in the top left-hand corner of the half-title page of the first volume.
There is an ex-libris on the inside front cover of the first volume, probably that of François Michel, an eminent Stendhal scholar and author of a monumental catalogue on the author of *The Red and the Black* 8,000/10,000
