Set of 6 alphabet sets for forming words using movable type.
1/ - Golden Eagle Anagrams. A prize game. New York, Mc Loughin Bros, [c. 1880]. A cardboard box illustrated with a chromolithograph, containing approximately 200 movable letters on cardboard for constructing words.
2/ - Movable alphabet comprising 336 letters, numbers and symbols, teaching children how to assemble letters and form words and short sentences. Paris, L’Imagerie de Paris, G. Gérardin, 1925. Folder with flaps made of kraft paper, with an illustrated front cover. Contains 2 lettered sheets (30 x 17 cm) displaying the movable cardboard letters held in place by elastic bands; one sheet features capital letters and numbers, whilst the other features lower-case letters and punctuation marks (some missing)
3/ - Fournier set for the rapid acquisition of reading, spelling and numeracy skills, containing 86 letters and 27 numerals. Paris, F. Nathan, [c. 1930]. A Kraft paper pouch folded into three panels with pockets and elastic bands for storing the letter and number cards. A movable bar for spelling out the words formed (6 letters missing). On the back of the number cards is a complete set of dominoes.
4/ - Thollois movable alphabet...Auxerre, Callé, Jay & Laulanie, [c. 1895]. Wooden box with a colour illustrated label on the lid, containing 40 compartments in which zinc metal pieces are stored; these have paper labels affixed to them bearing letters, accented letters and numbers (with a few missing pieces), four grooves on the inside of the lid allow the letters to be arranged to form words.
5/ - Thollois movable alphabet...Auxerre, Callé, Jay & Laulanie, [c. 1895]. A wooden box with a colour illustrated label on the lid, containing 52 compartments in which zinc metal pieces are stored, each bearing a paper label with letters, accented letters, punctuation marks and numbers (with a few missing pieces), four grooves on the inside of the lid allow the letters to be arranged to form words.
6/ - Kindergarten ABC. A colour-illustrated cardboard box containing coloured cardboard pieces in rectangular or semi-circular shapes of various sizes, designed for constructing alphabets on a table, with 3 sheets of examples.
7/ - Alphabo – An illustrated cardboard box containing cut-out coloured cards for constructing letters and words.
8/ - Deroin. Book of movable letters. Paris, Éditions Bourrelier [c.1935]. Educational material for learning to read or forming words using cut-out strips. 7 sets of complete alphabets.
Includes 4 boxes of stencils.
8/ - Paillard, J.-M. - Alphabcolor. Cardboard box with a colour-illustrated lid, containing 4 zinc plates bearing the 26 letters of the alphabet and the 10 numerals, 4 pots of paint and a brush. Interior in mint condition.
9/ - Improved interchangeable “Lock” stencil. S.L. (U.S.A.), S.G. Monge, undated [c.1880]. Cardboard box illustrated with a black-and-white drawing showing how to use the letters, containing 55 brass pieces, including 53 stencils (49 letters, 1 ampersand, 3 full stops) and 8 word-start and word-end pieces. Thanks to a sliding mechanism, the letters can be linked together to form a word ready for stencilling.
10/ - Metal Fastenings. Set of 27 metal stencils including the ampersand (13.4 x 11 cm).
10/ - Art stencils for lettering on posters, notices, signs, and for use in schools and on blackboards. Alphabet letters. California, Child Improvement Publications, [c. 1950]. Cardboard box (damaged) containing 23 cardboard letter stencils (missing i, s, z).
