A collection of illustrated alphabet books by Jean-Pierre Blanpain. 1/ - At the Alfabé Circus. - Roussas, the Author, 1997. Format 21 x 31.7 cm, sheets bound with plastic screws, covers of heavy card, the front cover featuring the title in colour, laminated – [1 blank folio], [30 folios illustrated with full-page 8-colour linocuts]. Each drawing is accompanied by a text. For the letter “A”: “Antoine the Harlequin Adores Anita the African Acrobat”. Printed in an edition of 250 copies, one of the 200 on white Centaure paper. Enclosed are two linocut greeting cards: one for 1990, ‘a mad year’ (220/250, signed), and the other for 1999 featuring E.A.S. (numbered 77/199). 2/ - Say, have you seen? - Points de Suspension, 2009. Size 16 x 14 cm, softback with colour-illustrated flaps – [28 ff., frontispiece, title page and 26 letters]. Each left-hand page bears the question ‘Say, have you seen?’… A seasoned alphabet on a plate (for the letter ‘A’). Signed and dated by E.A.S. with a drawing dated 3 December 2009 and a colour card by Blanpain, ‘Tapage nocturne’, with a long signature by E.A.S. 3/ - From Love to Discord. - Roussas, The Author, 1998. Size 10.8 x 10.8 cm, Leporello comprising 2 illustrated red hardback covers and 28 illustrated blue pages (1 title page, 26 letters, colophon).Numbered and signed in pencil (25/50) on the inside back cover. 4/ - The Letter. - Valaurie, The Author, 1997. Format 13.2 x 10.3 cm. A leporello comprising two hardback covers (the first bearing the title, the second the colophon), and eight pages illustrated in sepia with captions; the final page is stamped and postmarked (28/11/1997). Colophon and signed ‘11/31’ on the inside back cover. 5/ - *L’Alfanimo rigolo*. Bourg Les Valence, Jalin, 1998. Format 15 x 15.3 cm. Plain publisher’s cardboard binding, text bound in the Japanese style – [30 pp.: title page, dedication, 26 illustrated letters, table of contents, colophon]. An illustrated alphabet book in colour featuring the names of fictional animals with humorous captions. Printed in a run of 500 copies (no. 51/500, signed). 6/ - The Story of Monsieur A. Thierry Magnier, 2003. Format 15.8 x 16.2 cm, publisher’s hardback with colour illustrations, colour dust jacket – [18 leaves, 4 illustrated endpapers, title page, 13 pages for the alphabet book]. The sounds of the letters are used to form the words in the captions “Tout le monde l’a laissé tom B”. Inventive and very colourful. 7/ - *Mam’zell*. Roussa, the Author, 1996. Size 10.1 x 10 cm. Leporello, comprising 23 pages illustrated and captioned in colour on the front – 22 pages of the alphabet book and 1 page of justification (H and I, J and K, O and P, V and W on the same page) – the whole is contained in a square wooden box (cheese box style), with a title label on the lid bearing the inscription ‘32/100’ – also inscribed and signed on the label. As with the previous work, the captions are constructed using the sounds of the letters. 8/ – La Miss en boîte. Size 10 x 10 cm. Leporello, comprising 28 pages printed on the front (title, complete alphabet book, finished). The whole is contained in a square wooden box (cheese-box style), with a title label on the lid. Text by Blanpain, illustrated by Valérie Dumas. Justified and signed by both authors on the title page (189/200). 9/ - A Short Anatomical Alphabet Book for grown-ups who think they know it all & for curious little ones. Text by Blanpain, illustrated by Valérie Dumas. Véro, La Renarde Rouge, 2004. The Little Collection. Size 16 x 16 cm, paperback, illustrated cover with flaps – 60 pp., comprising 26 pp. of short text accompanied by 26 pp. of illustrations. 10/ - The Story of A. The Author, 02/1994. Size 12 x 12 cm. Leporello in Rhodoid with colour illustrations. Alphabet book printed in a run of 83 copies (no. 15), signed by the author. Included is a book written by Joëlle Brière and illustrated by J-P Blanpain, which is not an alphabet book. 10/ - Vingt sur vin. Véron, La Renarde Rouge, 2016. Format 20 x 20 cm, paperback with illustrated cover and flaps – 48 pp. 20 texts on the theme of wine, illustrated with 20 linocuts in black and red. Printed in an edition of 500 copies (this copy is unnumbered). Included are 8 items signed by Blanpain, along with accompanying items (invitation cards, greeting cards designed by Blanpain with accompanying items, etc.)
