A set of two works by Aesop, in-12, bound in full Empire-green long-grain morocco, with the covers adorned with a gilt fillet and embossed scrollwork, spine with raised bands decorated with fleurons and embossed floral motifs, chain on the edges, interior embossing, early 19th-century bindings. 1/ - Aesop in High Spirits, or the Latest Translation and Expansion of his Fables in Prose and Verse. Amsterdam, Antoine Michils, 1690 – [6 folios: title page, preface], 360 pp., [8 pp., censure by the Ordinary through ‘Momus’]. Illustrated with a frontispiece showing Aesop singing and accompanying himself on a hurdy-gurdy, in the middle of a forest and surrounded by 20 animals who have come running at his call: ‘Come to the lesson, young people… Aesop… is calling you to school. ‘Beasts used to speak better than people…’ and 156 vignettes. As stated in the preface, this edition includes a few fables by La Fontaine and Furetière, a fact confirmed in Momus’s preface: “La Fontaine asked me to add that most of the fables included in this new work had not been printed alongside those that had appeared under his name...”.
