Crombie, John. – Neither… Nor. Paris, Kickshaws, 1989. Square 8vo, loose leaves bound with a cord, with a printed cover and a lilac slipcase with three flaps, a three-part case, two of which are integral and joined, like a jigsaw puzzle, but immovable, by a piece of leather cut in the shape of a fish and embossed to resemble scales; the movable part, which secures the case, and the fixed part of the case, both feature a cut-out in the shape of a fish; the interior is lined with a second case protecting the book. The exterior of the case is covered with paper featuring metallic iridescence in shades of silver and red. The main body of the book comprises 24 pages, each illustrated with 10 different fish shapes repeated on every page, though the colour scheme evolves from the beginning to the end of the book (by John Crombie), with texts whose spelling changes by one letter with each new caption (or pseudo-caption), shifting, for example, from ‘fish’ to ‘dish’, ‘dash’, ‘cash’, ‘cast’… etc. First edition, printed in a run of 60 copies, numbered and signed by the artist (no. 8).
