[Surrealism – Book-object] – Henry, Maurice. – *Les Métamorphoses du Vide*. Paris, Les Editions de Minuit, n.d. [1955]. One in-4 volume, publisher’s cardboard binding, cloth spine – [64 pp.], 32 plates, including 16 openwork plates. First print run of this transformable book featuring the rare openwork yellow-back cover (this was quickly discontinued as the perforation process posed too many technical difficulties, and was replaced by a black cover printed in blue). The dreamlike adventures of a young man, Adrien. The various cut-out patterns in the illustrations give shape to the metamorphoses of the settings through which the young man passes on his dreamlike journey, as well as the mythological, historical or fantastical characters he encounters. The text, kept to a minimum, helps the reader navigate the labyrinth of Adrien’s visions whilst leaving the reader’s imagination complete freedom. A rare and curious picture book that stands in stark contrast to Éditions de Minuit’s usual editorial line.
