Vinay, Anik – Souchière, Emile-Bernard. – Runes. Gigondas, Atelier des Grames, 1981. Art book comprising 14 leaves of Japanese paper, housed in a case made of a lead alloy – 7 ff. of printed text, 5 ff. illustrated with black engravings and 2 ff. containing the colophon and ‘printed’ mark - At the top of the front cover, over an area measuring 80 x 70 mm, pure lead has been used to press printing type into a random text. The text and engravings are by A. Vinay; the sculpture is by E.-B. Souchière; both are known for their research, which earned them the Guy Lévis-Mano Prize in 1984 and the Walter Tiemann Prize in Leipzig in 1992 for their entire body of work. This edition is printed ‘on demand’. This copy bears the number 165 and is signed by the author and the engraver.
In the early 1970s, the concept of the ‘book as object’ emerged in the world of art publishing. Breaking with the traditional concept of the illustrated book, visual artists forged new connections between material and text and presented new forms of expression using innovative media to showcase the writing.
The Grames workshop is representative of this movement, in which the focus is on giving the text a physical presence, bringing it to life through the use of different materials (metal, wood, Plexiglas, glass, etc.).
