Description
Photograph album of Algeria, late 19th century [c. 1860]. Dimensions: 15.5 x 12 cm, bound in full shagreen with embossed decoration and a gilt metal clasp (unbound). Contains 48 photographs measuring 9.5 x 6.3 cm: 37 women, 2 children and 9 men. Some bear the mark of the Alary-Geiser studio on the reverse, which operated in Algiers and Oran.
Jean-Baptiste Alary settled in Algeria in 1847, where he learnt the art of photography under the guidance of the photographer Louis Joseph Delemotte. He very quickly set up his own business and was, in fact, one of the first professional photographers to establish himself in Algeria. In 1854–1855, Alary went into partnership with the widow of a Swiss watchmaker, Julie Geiser (widow of Lucien-Jacob Geiser). Their photographic studio remained in operation until 1868, when he handed over the business to the Geiser children.Photographs from the Alary-Geiser studio were used to illustrate press articles about Napoleon III’s visit to Algeria in 1865 and the earthquake of 1867.
