(2) ff., XII, 233 pp. First edition translated from Ottoman Turkish by Julien-Claude Galland of this famous account of the embassy sent by Sultan Ahmed III to Louis XV. Written by Yirmisekiz Çelebi Mehmed Efendi (1680-1732), Ottoman ambassador to Paris between 1720 and 1721, this account helped to change the Ottoman Empire's image of Europeans in terms of culture, lifestyle and literature. The copy in the Bibliothèque nationale de France is unusual in that it has an engraved portrait of the author on the frontispiece.
