First edition of this history of the town of Nice "according to the sacred monuments". It is the work of Abbé Pierre Gioffredo (1629-1692), considered to be the first scientific historian of Nice. This text made him famous among the Dukes of Savoy. In 1662, he was appointed historian of the Ducal House of Savoy, then ducal librarian in 1664. In 1665, he was placed at the head of the Oratorian church in Turin, and in 1673 Gioffredo was appointed tutor and chaplain to the Prince of Piedmont Victor-Amédée, the future Duke Victor-Amédée II, a position of prestige and responsibility that he held until the young Duke's accession to the throne in 1684. In 1689, he returned to Nice and took charge of the Abbey of Saint-Pons.
