Description
HUGO (Victor). Notre-Dame de Paris. Paris, Charles Gosselin (Imprimerie de Cosson), 1831. 4 volumes in-12, contemporary half-basane, smooth spine decorated with romantic gilt irons. Scattered foxing. First edition in in-12 format and divided into three parts which bear on the false title the words fifth, sixth and seventh edition. The print run of the original in-8 edition was divided into four parts. Gosselin, who published the in-8 and then the in-12 editions, continued this count, hence the fifth and then sixth editions (both of which are, according to Clouzot, "equally rare"). This copy is marked sixth edition. Each title is decorated with a vignette after JOHANNOT. The covers are not preserved.
