One volume in broadside, brown calf with braces on wooden boards (Ais: 79.5 x 53 cm), umbilicas, bouillons and metal frieze on boards, ribbed spine, clasps. 107 ff. Binding faded and missing, several pages heavily wet, some with small tears, some vellum pages yellowed, clasps missing. Three pages contain indentations in the form of lined paper sewn onto the page and a corner of another page has been sewn back together.
An important antiphonary with neumatic notation, calligraphed and illuminated by friar Sebastian Laraña, a Dominican monk illuminator of the Order of Fishers who practised in the region of Zaragoza in Spain in the second half of the 18th century, and for whom this is one of the earliest known works. It was produced for the Order of Notre-Dame de la Merci, whose coat of arms it bears at the head of the title. This order of mercenary mendicants was founded by Pierre Nolasque in Barcelona in the 13th century and specialised in the redemption of Christian captives enslaved by the Moors. Very little is known about Laraña, except that he did a great deal of work for the convent.
The antiphonary consists of a handwritten table of the saints typical of this region and celebrated by this order (Saint Thomas Aquinas, Louis Gonzaga, Saint Isidore, Saint Mary of Cervelló, Saint James the Apostle and Saint Peter Armangaud) written on the first lining, a beautiful painted title page and 107 pages, all on vellum. It is decorated with a large historiated gilt and silver initials at the beginning of the text, 73 initials decorated with plant motifs in colour, 65 initials decorated or enhanced with colour and 4 anthropomorphic initials.
